Port in Campania, SW Italy, 48 km/30 mi SE of
Naples; population (1988) 154,000. It was
founded by the Romans about 194 BC, destroyed
by Charlemagne, and sacked by Holy Roman
Emperor Henry VI 1194. The temple ruins of
the ancient Greek city of Paestum, with some
of the earliest Greek paintings known, are
nearby. Salerno has had a university
(1150-1817, revived 1944) and medical school
since medieval times.
